Has anyone played with this at all? It was put out by some former google
designers - http://www.cuil.com/. It is highly touted as the next
generation of search engine.
My very limited tests have not been very promising. It seems to find
the link to the site - not the site directly. I searched for funz and
found my site below but not as a click able link. The link goes to a
site which refers to my site. Seems rather odd to me.

Too much eye candy.
Just give me the results.

Interesting reaction - seem to have a 50/50 split with the folks here
too. I love it, and to me the "feel" of it is nicer than google etc. But
does it detract from the results? hmm, jury's out.

It's very much a personal preference thing.
I can undrstand the mindset that says "The technology exists to make things
shiny, so why not use it", but for me, a search engine is just a tool to get
me from a blank browser window to my final destination.
All I want is a list of relevant search returns served up to me in the
fastest most efficient way.

Similarly when I stop at motorway services, I don't want a mini shopping
mall, amusement arcades, and classy restaurants.
I just want a clean working toilet, a hot cup of coffee and a bacon roll.
So to that end, I use roadside truck stops instead of the big services -
they're a damn sight cheaper too.

Perhaps I'm just set in my ways, and scared of change ;-)

I like it. Just did a quick test, and it looked very easy to use, good
sized returned data, clearly laid out.

Yeah, that's cool.

They claim to focus on 'relevance' - that site may talk about your domain
name more than you do.

The consensus on several forums seems to suggest that the over-touted launch
was a total unmitigated disaster (almost as bad as mahalo.idiot).

They also made the classic mistake of calling it cuil (pronounced "Quill"),
while quill.com is owned (and wasted) by another company. They compounded
this junior school error by telling people to pronounce it 'cool', while
cool.com is owned (and wasted) by another company.

D'oh!

But it is early days, and even Google fans have conceded that it is
innovative.
Mind you, it was staretd by a bunch of ex-Google engineers!

Sorry, I meant to say:

"They claim to focus on 'context' - that site may talk about your domain
name more than you do."

I let the facts impose on the official story!

It's pronounced cuil because the people behind it have Northern Ireland connections
and used a Gaelic name and that's how you pronounce it in Gaelic.

I did a search to find my own site. I don't appear to be listed, even
though Google has me number 2. One thing I noticed is that most of the
sites that were listed had a different site's logo next to them. When
you click the logo, you don't go to the site that owns the logo. That is
a little confusing.

The results that come back are kinda crappy I thought - searched for
several of our commercial project and found many, many irrelevant Usenet
and forum posts.

I like the layout though - I guess if they actually make the search work
properly (?) then it has promise.

I performed 3 different searches and clicked through the first 3 or 4 pages
of each and it kept bringing up mostly the same results with a few new
results sprinkled in. That is an absurd search engine.

Frankly, I'm not that impressed. I just did a search for "NeonNero" (my
online "identity"), and while flipping through the 23 pages of results
(each page displaying 3 columns), I was unable to find my own blog
website (which is at www.neonnero.com). Google found it on the first
result page. The closest Cuil got, was a now (slightly) defunct page
showing servers in the "NeonNero Network" (which, frankly, doesn't do
much good), and an image gallery for my last attempt at attending a
so-called LAN party during Easter 2006 (located at
excite2006.neonnero.com).

Oddly enough, it did find my "portal" website at kimandre.com, which
also links to neonnero.com. Also, Cuil seems to have a big problem with
HTML entities as well. The entry for kimandre.com is listed as "Kim
Andr& Aker&" - the HTML source for my own website shows "Kim
André Akerø".

André Akerø".

Must admit, searching for my non-spacegirl identities (which are equally
outspoken at times, with several busy-ish blogs) resulted in nothing at
all :s

See what it found as reported in
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/29/cuil_launch/

The tests that I have done 'cuil' as being one of the worst engines
I've tried. I also tried it a couple of days ago and it was
inaccessible - presumably cleaning up the 'porn' issues reported above
though the site said it was overloaded due to popularity.

They have received over $25m in funding. I'm working on a better search
engine which unlike cuil addresses areas that Google is poor at. It's
already been reviewed by two industry experts, both of whom agree that
this idea looks very promising. Any prospective investors out there
interested in finding out more, please get in touch. Seeking approx
$100,000 in first round financing.

I'm talking about here)
