Dylan Parry - 03 Jul 2008 17:09 GMT > ... in this group when you filter out the GoogleGropers. > > Who'd a thunk? Well, I don't filter out Google Groups, and it's been pretty quiet for me too. For the first time since I've been reading this group, the number of threads (I show posts from the last 14 days) is significantly less than the height of my newsreader can show.
Looks like it's on the way out, which is a shame as I've been reading posts here since at 1998 :(

The latest pointless thread on browser window widths and fluid design etc has provided lots of opportunites for stupid quotes, comic deliberate misunderstandings and the like.
Perhaps someone may even bring a new kettle and some hobnobs?

Last couple days, I've seen a header or two that I considered downloading. Busy days for me with lots of things going on, just mostly not here. Yes the spam level is high, but that's part of the usenet bidness.
Maybe there are enough websites now that people can find most of the answers they need without resorting to the dreaded "folk". I recall somebody here (or in ais-e) going off to start his own web-based group.
aww isn't going away soon as far as I can tell. Boring phases come and go.

Another thing that might be causing a drop in volume is the big stink about kiddie porn that major USan ISPs are using to drop Usenet completely (or only retain the Big 8 hierarchies, of which alt is not a member) because it's not making them any money and they've been wanting to drop it anyway. This way they get to drop something with no money in it for them but spin it that they're keeping the world safe for the children. Some people may have lost their feed and not be clued enough to simply find another one (even for free).

It would've been a boon when AOL dropped Usenet access -- had they not emailed their subscribers and named Google Groups as a replacement.

WebTV in the mid/late 90's didn't help any either, they had their own private usenet, and let subscribers use the public usenet.
