A bit of a cheat and slightly longer but that would make:
"The first 15 Mini Cooper S' that were sold here went for an
average of just £55 each."
now become:
"The first 15 S Series Mini Coopers that were sold here went for an
average of just £55 each."
Hmm... it's still not very easy to skim read because the mini cooper
bit is now slightly buried.
Any more thoughts?

Again a slight cheat but perhaps:
"The first 15 Mini Coopers (S Series) that were sold here went for
an
average of just £55 each."
Any thoughts?

I think you hit it when you did Mini Cooper S'
No need for th eplural s at the end. Just the appostrophe...I think...
It looked right to me anyway.

No, that's a possessive. Like "Jones' dog".

Wrong.

Mini Cooper S
And another one...
And another one...
And another one...
The first time I saw one was when I was visiting Europe in the mid-90's.
Wondered what that little thing was - it looked cute :-)
They started popping up here a few years ago. I admit they make sense -
and even more now with our gas prices approaching 1/2 of yours.

Looks like the best one to me without going down the
"Mini Coopers (S type)" route.

"Mini Cooper S'" is *dead* wrong. Plurals aren't formed by adding
apostrophes.
*Possessives* may be, as in "Jones' Brothel".
Possessives are not plurals.

Perhaps it's a bit like the plural of Court Martial?
Minis Cooper S?
I'm joking...

Absolute bollocks.
Please don't quote unreliable sources. If anyone really wants a
defacto answer, then I suggest they contact the editor of the Oxford
English Dictionary, and then await the result of a ten year nationwide
debate.

According to that page, the source is Webster's New Collegiate
Dictionary. And the page itself is created by a reputable educational
institution. So it seems reasonable to quote it here.

Your question reminds me of the story about the Irish cobbler. A goose is
the name for one of the tools used by a cobbler to shape leather. The
cobbler wanted a couple of new ones so he sat down to write to the supplier
to get them.
First he wrote:
"Dear Sirs ... can you please send me two new gooses"
He thought that didn't sound quite right, so he rewrote:
"Dear Sirs ... can you please send me two new geese"
He didn't like the sound of that either, thinking it might confuse them.
Finally he wrote:
"Dear Sirs ... can you please send me a new goose ... p.s. When you're at
it, you might as well send me two."
:)
