>> How does sending money to a Paypal account help an identity thief?
>
>Sending a couple of dollars to your account is part of Paypal's verification

>it.
Ah. I understand why you might be concerned. I am well aware of the
difference between the Paypal verification process and a payment by
a third party, but your warning is a useful one for those who do not
know the difference.
>Anyone have access to your bank statements?
No. I do not do online banking, all financial information on
my PC is encrypted (AES encryption standard) on a machine
running the QNX operating system, my bank statements arrive
at a locked high-security mailbox, and I use a shredder that
meets GSA NSA/CSS 02-01 specifications.
In addition, I keep the the credit card and bank account
associated with my PayPal account at a level where the
total available funds are $10 for each, thus limiting my
exposure if someone breaches my PayPal security.
I am reasonably confident that the transaction I described
was indeed one of my online buddies playing a little joke
on me.
