After surfing two or three web sites my system slows to a crawl and
eventually hangs up. The only fix I can come up with is to reboot the
system, and have the problem repeat itself.

I'm running IE6 with Win XP Home.

Thanks for any help.

Is the PC (by itself) hanging up? Or are you losing your net connection
(i.e., your IP/networking connection becomes disconnected, which results in
IE appearing to hang up)? This is important in diagnosing your problem.

I think it's the net connection. I discovered that by powering the cable
modem off then back on I can sometimes get going again. Other times this
doesn't work and I have to do a complete reboot including powering the modem
off.

TIA

Well, it's interesting. I suspect there are some subtle network connectivity
problems in XP that result in frequently broken connections. I would suggest
two things. First, go to Windows Update and (DO NOT load ALL the XP updates)
make sure to install (if you do not already have it) the following:

1) the Windows XP service pack 1 (SP 1) update;

2) the Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (817778); and

3) Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826939).

This may or may not improve things.

If not, then the next step is to download the free Mozilla browser (I
suggest Mozilla over Netscape since it is much faster. Both however will be
"recognized" by your computer and by web sites as netscape-style browsers)
at www.mozilla.org.

Run your PC with Mozilla as your browser (don't use IE). This again may
help.

I would bet that your situation would improve somewhat. My other question
is, who is your cable modem provider. If it is Roadrunner, then part of the
problem with the network disconnections is surely due to them. Their service
has experienced problems as their user base has grown and they have
implemented customer-service procedures which prevent the few knowledgable
techs they have from properly fixing problems that occur. If you have
another provider, such as ComCast, I am not really familar with the
situation there.

Hope this advice helps, and please reply to the group to let us know what
happens.
