I keep some fairly tight restrictions for the default "Internet" zone
(IE 6.0.2800.1106), things like scripting, Java, etc. If I find a
site that I like, I add it to the "Trusted sites".
I do a lot of searching that turns up PDF files, and I would like to
be able to open those without adding those to the Trusted sites or
changing any other security for the Trusted sites. Is there some
place to set this?

First you forget names
Then you forget faces
Then you forget to zip up
Then you forget to zip down.

Certainly, but... Viewing of PDF files relies on ActiveX. If you are
keeping your Internet zone restricted to avoid malware, then you
definitely want to restrict ActiveX in the Internet zone. You would
have to make a choice -- the convenience of viewing PDF files in the
Internet zone versus the safety of not running ActiveX in the Internet
zone.
You could always choose to download the PDF file and view it locally.
