Over the last couple of days I've noticed a strange and potentially
debilitating problem with IE6 under Windows XP. Whenever I click on a
link that opens a new window, not only does the new window fail to
open, the current IE window closes (though any other open IE windows
remain open). The problem even extends to clicking on links in email
and Usenet messages, though in that case nothing happens at all.
I use the Google toolbar, which includes a pop up blocker. I tried
turning the blocker off and even completely uninstalling the Google
toolbar, but this had no effect on the problem. If there are any other
pop up blockers installed, it's news to me. Any ideas?

I have also expierence a similar problem as you. One of my computers is
running Win98 and another XP Home. Another computer I have, also running
XP Home, doesn't share the problem. I don't use the Google toolbar on any
of them so I don't think this is the root of the problem.
