What I should really say is.....
I always thought that hitting the red cross stopped the page from
downloading, i.e. if there were hundreds of graphics, it would
interrupt it immediately, and you'd get an incomplete page, but at
least be able to proceed.
Since I've gone to Windows XP (aaargh!) it no longer seems to do that,
and it's taking minutes rather than seconds to load pages sometimes
(e.g. eBay!) - and I have a relatively fast PC set-up.
Is there no way the red cross will work? Is it perhaps something to
do with all those settings re Java and what-have-you? (Right click,
properties on IE icon)
Grateful for any tips!

"and I have a relatively fast PC set-up"
relative to what?

This is from IE7's Help pages:
"If a page you are trying to view is taking too long to open, click the
Stop button on the right side of the Address bar. If the page has
stopped loading, you can click the Refresh button to try again."
Does that make sense to you? To me neither.
