Why is there an "X" button on the left side of my search box?

What does the X button do? I type something into the search button and click
the X, but nothing happens.

This is the Stop button.
To stop the page loading.

But why would I want to stop my search even before I start it?

It isn't to stop the search. It's to stop the page from loading. The page
whose address is to the left of the stop button.

However, the stop button doesn't work. It never has, and it probably never
will.

It works for me, but seems rather redundant (like the Go button).  Just
hit the Esc key to stop the page loading.

Mine is working too..

Try making IE (5, 6, 7, don't matter) stop looking for a site it can't
find...

You enter an address. It can't find it and displays a notification. Then
reload the page. Now try stopping it. It won't. It never has. Even
entering a new, valid address and hitting the enter key won't make it stop
trying to access the other page first. You have to quit and restart to get
it to behave.

That's not how mine works.  I just hit the Esc key, and it quits trying
to load.  I don't have to quit and restart the browser, and have never
had to do this.  Under any version of Windows, the browser would crash
occasionally as all programs do.  Same way with all windows versions as
they came out.  But that had nothing to do with the stop button/Esc key
not working.  Perhaps you have other issues with your install?

I do (most of which are addressed by others), but the behaviour I
described I got accustomed to, after seeing it happen on numerous versions
of Windows, numerous versions of MSIE, and numerous different computers,
most of which weren't installed by me, but by my sysadmin or my clients'.
It's one of the bugs that got carried over from IE5 to IE7. I'm sure there
are more, but I haven't seen any others yet.

Type into the search box then click the magnifying glass...
