I have the same symptoms as described by abradaxis. I have also noticed
that I can get to any site by using the full URL, including protocol; ie
www.google.com will not work, but http://www.google.com works fine. I
haven't tried repair install of IE as yet, I will tomorrow if there aren't
any further suggestions forthcoming.

This is a problem with one of the latest windows security updates.
Microsoft is supposedly working on a window security update fix. In the
mean time you can go to add/remove programs and remove one of the latest
updates. Not sure exactly which one but it is one of these 4, KB11562,
KB912812, KP908531 or KB911567. If you unload these updates or mostly
likely it is only one of them than the problem will go away, unfortunately
this will be at the expense of your security. Microsoft stated they would
be releasing a fix on 25 April but I have yet to see it.

A repair install of IE fixed this problem for me, probably because it
removed the update(s) mentioned in the above posting?
