this is a pesky problem.  i just got a new computer.  things were
working pretty well for a couple of weeks.  just the other day,
however, a pop-up showed up (i had pop-up blocker on) advertising
"winantivirus pro 2005" and "winantispyware pro 2005".  i closed the
pop-up and ie crashed.  ever since then my ie crashes just about every
time i try to browse in more than 1 window.  of course, it crashes out
on sites that require a second window (such as my bank's web-page).  i
scanned and cleaned my computer with mcaffee virusscan and with
ad-aware, but the problem is still happening.  i've also tried
uninstalling and re-installing ie, but it's still crashing.  i'm on xp
media center and ie6.  any thoughts of what to do next?

Bummer that this is happening on a new pc.

You didn't mention Windows update.  In case you haven't, be sure to run it
(and re-run it) until you don't have any more updates.  For tha matter, make
sure all your other security software is up to date.

Do you have error reporting turned on? When IE crashes, it will send an
error, and sometimes comes back with a web page that talks about how to
avoid crashes, usually by disabling add-ons.

Spyware is certainly suspect.  I don't know AdAware, but hear it is good.
Personally, I have fixed systems using Spybot Search and Destroy and
Bazooka.  Google them, and you'll find them quickly.

Spybot S&D scan takes a long time but can fix most problems.

Bazooka scan is lightning quick, but it is amazing at how much it can
detect, sometimes things that S&D misses.  Unfortunately, with Bazooka, you
must do manual uninstall of anything you find.

Good luck.

Spybot S&D may also detect that McAfee has disabled the Windows Security
Center (and replaced it with the McAfee Security Center).  This is in the
form of two registry entries that have been changed.  I leave these as is,
but you can see how malware could want to turn off the security center.
