.mht files not displaying correctly

I've saved some web pages as a single file with the
.mht extension.
When double clicking filename.mht I got an error
msg re couldn't find the application.
I deleted the mht association then recreated it.
Now double clicking filename.ext brings up IE but the
display shows the HTML code and I can't figure out
how to get it to show it as a webpage.

What did I do wrong and how do I fix this?

Thanks,
Oscar

I forgot to mention: IE6.0 and XP home.
