Arcury - 23 Jan 2005 18:12 GMT I have been using internet explorer 6 (Internet explorer Q889283).
Since a few weeks ago I notice when I use internet explorer for the first time a day I can not type any thing there (for example, to search something) same time the close button on the right top corner does not work either. I have to press control- alt-delete then press end tusk to close. Then I start over, click on IE icon to start new internet window then worked fine.
Today, no matter how many times I start IE, I can not type at all (virtual bar is there blinking), close button does not respond either.
What is this about? Anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it? Do I have to delete IE and reinstall? I have IE up to date so kind of pain to reinstall and down load all update.
I visited Microsoft web site but I can not type anything to search in the support. I typed some words on Word and tried to past it, didn't take it either. Please help. Thanks.
jopa66 - 23 Jan 2005 19:11 GMT The first thing I suspect is a corrupted Internet cache. Delete your Temporary Internet files and maybe dump the History and Cookies too. If that doesn't work, see this link to actually delete and re-create these folders. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Post back your results.

I tried that several times. Used IE tool bar "tool" then "option", cleaned temp file, cookies and history. Then tried Norton system work clean sweep to clear active X as well. Restart, it worked a few minuets then the same problem. I wonder if macromedia Flash Player has corrupted file. Just because warning window popped up to ask if I wont to install it which I already have. And it shows up on the active x list as well. I thought about deleting this program but it does not show up on the list of "add/ remove program" just drag it into trash can? Could you think of anything else?? I am thinking about using "restore system" My OS is Windows ME.

Also, in Add/Remove Programs - Choose Internet Explorer > Delete. A window should pop up giving you the option to repair your browser. Aside from that, be very cautious about using Clean Sweep as it seems to want to remove a lot more than it should. I don't think macromedia Flash could be causing this but, if you suspect corruption, go to Downloaded Programs file in C:\Windows. Rightclick macromedia Flash file and choose delete. You can always download it again.

Arcury - 25 Jan 2005 01:26 GMT So, I found macromedia uninstaller at their web site and used it. Uninstall and reinstall but it didn't do anything. I tried system restore three times back to the earliest possible day, no luck. It said nothing was changed. Actually it supposed restart computer but hung up in black screen. I mean it could not shut down so each time I had to shut down manually. Of cause scan disk starts and froze. Yesterday, I could go a couple minuets like 2 web pages worked fine. Today absolutely dead. On the other hand, I found if I click on web address in the E-mail on Outlook express, it open up IE window. That one works. Does anyone know how to fix this???
jopa66 - 25 Jan 2005 07:57 GMT You haven't said if you tried any of the other advice I've given you. Troubleshooting is a step-by-step process and a thorough virus/malware scan would also be advised before more drastic steps as re-installing IE or even the OS. Work through the information below and post back your results.

WARNING: If your PC is already infested with spyware/adware, resist the temptation to impulse buying of anti-spyware products that you see on the Net or receive as e-mail Spam. Vendors of "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware products advertise heavily via Google's "AdWords". And many are known to create problems or your machine just to try and sell you the way to "fix" it. There are a variety of anti-spyware products and web sites -- some reliable and trustworthy, some not.
Instead, you can get help online from a corps of savvy volunteers who specialize in busting spyware.
First: I suggest you read this informative tutorial: Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
CAUTION!!! Some malware may kill your internet connection when you remove it. This program, LSPFIX, should enable you to regain your connection by correcting the errors in your registry. Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs below, download a copy of LSPFIX and WINSOCKXPFIX from the following sites, just-in-case: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
And for expert online help, the following links are recommended: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php OR http://www.spywarewarrior.com/ OR http://forum.aumha.org/
The folks at these forums have a lot of experience in dealing with Hijackers/Spyware/Malware. There is no charge for the help and information available although donations are accepted. Be sure to read the guidelines, and following their instructions you will download a little program called HijackThis. Its purpose is simply to scan your computer and generate a LOG of everything that is running at that moment. It does not decide what is Good or Bad. That's what the experts at the forums will do. So *DO NOT* just arbitrarily start deleting what it finds.
Next: To use these forums, set up an account and post your LOG there, not here. Someone will analyze it and let you know if anything is amuck and what you can do to fix it. In the event your chosen site is down -- go here for a list of other Security Analysis sites and/or forums: http://a-sap.org/
***Always follow safe Internet practices:***
1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.
2. Keep your anti-spyware up to date, and scan your system regularly.
3. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.
4. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many viruses, worms, and trojans infect a person's system then immediately spread themselves to the people in the infected person's address book via email attachments.
5. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.
6. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
7. USE A FIREWALL.
Scumware/Cr@pware - Removal & Protection Tools:
BEWARE of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites Many unscrupulous companies/individuals are trying to "cash-in" on people's need for anti-spyware products. Evidence to this effect is the sheer number of applications that are mere rip-offs of Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware (two of the most recognized and trusted anti-spyware apps on the Net). Proof of this can be found here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.spywarewarrior.com/family_resemblances.htm but,... the following list contains a number of (mostly) FREE programs that can be used to eliminate immediate threats as well as secure your system.
CWShredder v1.59.1 (FREE) Removes all variations of the spyware/hijacker "CoolWebSearch". This is the first line of defense whenever you suspect possible parasite infestation. Some current variations of CoolWebSearch block Ad-Aware and Spybot from catching everything. http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip http://majorgeeks.com/download4086.html CWShredder Version 2.1 (FREE) http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
Some variants of CoolWebSearch will close every browser window visiting many anti-spyware sites,anti-virus sites or even Windows Update. It will even close Spybot S&D and some other anti-spyware applications when you try to use them. To eliminate this threat, use CWS.SmartKiller Removal Utility: http://www.safer-networking.org/minifiles.html http://majorgeeks.com/download4113.html
Spybot (FREE) Removes hijackers, spyware, adware, usage tracks and more. Resident ""TeaTimer"" feature monitors crucial processes on your machine. It immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. In addition, TeaTimer detects, when something wants to change some critical registry keys. It can protect you against such changes giving you an option to "Allow" or "Deny" the change. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

I do appreciate your sincere advice.
I was desperately needed fix on that day because I was putting online job application. I checked this newsgroup maybe 10times to seek new advice after cleaning temp files. Anyways I called Dell tech support and ended up reinstall Windows Me. The price I paid for this lesson is loosing the biggest backup data by corrupted file.
I always have anti virus software and its definition file up to date and running Zone Alarm. I was a victim of ad-spyware.
I printed out your last advice to read well. I downloaded Ad-aware and spybot because one of that website recommended having two anti spyware.
Result- my computer became painfully slow. It takes 15-20 second to respond my mouse click. Web pages load slower than dial up. (I use cable) All program load and work so slow. I guess I have to buy more memory and drop one of anti spyware. But I don't know which one is better for me yet. Someone told me 256MB of RAM is enough for Windows Me because it does not use memory so efficient and someone said that is not true. Any advice here?? Safe surfing is pain as well ;)
Thank you very much and I will remember helpful people here.

I guess I have to buy more memory and drop > one of anti spyware. But I don't know which one is better for me yet. Regarding anti-spyware, I would advise you to keep both Spybot and Ad-Aware, as each can sometimes find something that the other may miss. Update each before running the scans but, do not run scans together at the same time. That will slow down the machine. As for the "real time" components of these programs - choose only one to run in the background. Spybot uses the "teatimer" and Ad-Aware uses "Ad-Watch". You probably only need one of these running and this is the only part that would use any resources during normal computer usage. Be sure to defrag your hard drive as this can also speed things up a bit. And if you haven't yet, go to Windows Update and check for any patches for your system.
What anti-virus are you using? Norton is notorious for slowing down a system. I normally recommend AVG or AVAST. Both are free to home user and do an excellent job. And Zone Alarm is a good choice for Firewall. Be careful what other programs load up when you boot the computer. MSN Messenger, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Adobe, MS Office, P2P clients, Video and Sound card utilities, and many other softwares insist on adding startup entries to your system. The only thing these are good for is slowing down your machine. When you *want* to use any of these programs, just start them manually. You don't need all this crap starting automatically. And I would almost bet that this is the reason your machine is so sluggish. Also, make sure that "indexing" services are not running such as "Find Fast" in Control Panel.
One of the tools in Spybot is a very easy way to control all these startup entries. And if you run the "teatimer", it will alert you when something tries to add a new startup entry (as well as other nasty things).
So... now that you're back up and running, there's a few ideas to help you stay that way.
