Under XP Home SP2:

If I try to access an FTP site the connection is blocked an a small
square box appears in the upper left of the screen -- In title bar
"f..." and in the Status Bar "unknown zone". If I double-click the
Status Bar of this box up pops Internet Properties.

***In Safe Mode -- no such problem. ***

All Internet properties have been reset to default. Checked adware,
junkware, and viruses.

There are no additional (non-XP) firewalls. But there might be an
Earthlink SMProxy.exe in memory which I can't seem to remove.

When accessing FTP sites directly from IE 6 or from 3rd party program
(EZtrust Antivirus uses an FTP server directly for its defitnion
updates)  same behavior.

HTTP access is fine.

I tried to add the sites I needed to the Trusted Zone (Internet
Propoties) but I got a message saying the sites were ALREADY in a Zone
-- but they don't appear in any other Zone.

Can I clean out any Zone designations in the Registrry? Where?

Did a virus do this?

I didn't find any info on my Google and MSKB searches.

Thanks.

Solution found:

When I disabled MS Firewall, access was restored (hence the success in
Safe Mode).

When I removed all Earthlink (dialup) software, I could then re-enable
the MS Firewall and successfully access FTP sites.

So possibly if you want Earthlink you cannot use the MS Firewall while
accessing FTP sites.

Note: Prior to uninstalling Earthlink software I had tried enable FTP
PASV option and permitting FTP server in the MS Firewall, with no
success.
