When I download .csv files using IE6 on XPpro the excel program opens inside
IE. I need it to open in excel directly so I can run my macros. According to
Microsoft knowlege base article 162059 this is the procedure:
To configure Internet Explorer to open Office files in the appropriate
Office program by using the Folder Options tool:
 1.. Open My Computer.
2.. On the Tools menu (or the View menu), click Folder Options (or click
Options).
3.. Click the File Types tab.
4.. In the Registered file types list, click the specific Office document
type (for example, Microsoft Excel Worksheet), and then click Advanced (or
click Edit).
5.. In the Edit File Type dialog box, click to clear the Browse in same
window check box (or click to clear the Open Web documents in place check
box).
 6.. Click OK.
I am OK thru step 5 but I do not have neither of those checkboxes there. The
other option given is changing registry but I do not want to risk that on a
5 day old machine. This is a new machine with latest programs. My old Win 98
machine opens  them as excel files in excel.

Yes that is a workaround but not the correct fix.
Thanks for input.

Follow the procedure that you (microsoft) has outlined but, don't try
changing the CSV. Use the native file extension for Excel i.e.. XLS  The
checkbox in question is at the bottom of the "Edit File Type" dialog box as
soon as you click "Advanced".
