Favorites are yours not IEs. When surfing and you want to go back to a
favorite just click on 'favorites' on the top of IE and 'add' to favorites.
Then when you want to go back there click start---favorites--and select the
one you want.
Wow, did I ever explain myself wrong.
I'm familiar with how one adds, deletes, and moves around bookmarks in
IE. What I want to do is get at the list in a file form so I can, as I
said, manipulate it in, say, Notepad, rather than having to copy all
those names and URLs.
For example, I believe it's possible to back up one's favorites, which
implies that some file exists or can be created. Is there a known or
figure-outable location on my hard drive for that file?

Try right clicking on favorites and 'send to'.
