I am setting up a table as follows
a table (which should prferably occupy the whole screen), with 2 columns
- first column 150 pixels
- second column takes up the rest of the table width

I found that I can't get away with not using fixed width, which isn't any
good at all!!

If I set table to 100%, and first column to 150pixel:
   <tr><td width="150">first col</td><td>the rest of the row</td></tr>

I actually find that (at least on IE6SP1), the browser doesn't obey the
column width!! First column will only be set to 150pixels, if there are
loads of text in the second column to squash the column to 150 pixels,
otherwise, the first column become wider.  I don't want that!

How could I fix this?

Hi Patrick,

You can use the CSS to decorate the table tb, don't allowing it to extend
automatically. This is the sample code:
<td width="150" style="word-wrap:break-word"...

Please feel free to let me know if you have any question.

I can't think of any CSS style that make table width NOT auto extend, and
word-wrap:break-word is not good enough.
Note that my third column actually contains another table (width 100%)

Hi Patrick,

The CSS style sheet in my last post will control the table not extend
horizontally; however, if there is too much letters in the column, it will
extend the table grid vertically. Could you give me one page design graph
or screen capture? If you want to fix the table, we should perform the
design carefully.

Thanks a lot!

try: ...<td width="100%">the rest of the row</td>...
