Trying to use timeline fx, but I sometimes don't get a preview, instead
get an actionscript error (while the effect window is open).
It usually complains about not being able to find something. What's up?

OK, to further elaborate, this is the error:
Exception in exportPreviewSWF: TypeError: instance has no properties
Error opening URL "file:///HD/Users/me/Library/Application
Support/Macromedia/Flash MX 2004/en/Configuration/preview1.swf"
Exception in reverse: TypeError: tmpFrame has no properties
Quitting and re-launching Flash usually gets this working again, but
it's costing me more time than the effects are saving.

I'm getting this error too, but only when using the transition or transform commands. Restarting does not fix it for me. It just started happening and was working fine earlier.

I too am getting a similar erroor every time i try and apply one of the new
text effects - it's very annoying~:
Error opening URL "While executing in Untitled-1, the following JavaScript
error(s) occurred:
unterminated string literal
"
Error opening URL
"file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/'_'/Local%20Settings/Application%20Data/M
acromedia/Flash%20MX%202004/en/Configuration/While executing in Untitled-1,
the following JavaScript error(s) occurred:
TypeError: Object.fxutil has no properties
"
I tried the 'Swish PowerFX' text effects mx2004 plugin, and the same error
occurs every time! I tried reinstalling and all that and it still doesn't go
away! Does anyone know what the problem is or could be?
Fred.

I'm getting the same error too...but not until it worked for a few minutes to
get me excited about using the effect! Anyone know how to fix it? I am on
system 10.34 on a Mac and am using a trial version.

I came here hoping to find some suggestions on this very problem, and all I see
are unanswered posts from others having the same problem. Is there really no
one out there that has an idea? Not even from MM?

I get the same errors, but only on one computer, the other computer that Flash
is loaded onto, it doesn't. Same configurations, OS, etc. Except it doesn't
work on the G4/450 but does on the Dual 1.42 ghz.

I didn't manage to fix this - however when i reinstalled windows the problem
didn't show itself. I think it is somwthing to do with the version of Java
installed on the machine because i think the preview window uses it. It's
just the previews that don't work - a version of Swish (a plugin that uses a
similar interface to the timeline effects) also had the same problems, though
you could click apply and the effect would apply.

The lack of an answer concerning this issue has been astounding given the
number of complaints and the amount of time that has passed without any
answers. I think I figured it out though, at least for Macs.
I don't know about Windows, but for OS X users experiencing this problem, the
most common cause seems to be an apostrophe in the name of the hard drive that
Flash is installed on. Unfortunately, the only workaround is to rename your
drive.
Yeah, it's that's simple, and no, Macromedia hasn't posted this solution in
any official tech notes, probably because they're embarrassed that the major
update that was supposed to fix this totally missed the mark. The only other
advice they've come up with to date is to reinstall, which accomplishes nothing.
Once your hard drive name doesn't have any "crazy" punctuation marks in it,
their crappy Javascripts should cease malfunctioning and the timeline effects
feature should work as intended.
And as a nice bonus, if you use Dreamweaver, you'll get to reconfigure every
one of your site defs, because renaming your hard drive screws them up.

I had problems with that too. Try creating your effects in frame 1 of a new
layer, then dragging the effect to the frame and layer you want it on. My
understanding is that Macromedia Flash can have a problem with adding timeline
effects after frame 30.<hr></blockquote>
Moving my keyframe to a frame before frame 30 worked perfectly. The error went
away and the transistion applied fine. Macromedia really ought to fix this
issue!

I was having the same problem. Placing my item at frame 1 and then applying the transition seemed to solve my problem. I then dragged the completed transition to the desired place. I read someplace else that Flash does not like progressive jpg's, but that was not my problem. Hope that helps everyone
