I'm taking some online training for Flash. Both the training and the help
system leave something unclear (to me at least). I make a mask layer and add a
shape to it. So how do I select whether I'm showing what's under the shape and
masking everything else, or masking the shape and showing everything else? I
really can't find a way to do this. The "default" result I'm getting happens to
be the opposite of the default that shows on the training, but I think  I need
to be able to choose which it is.

...?

To my understanding masking in flash has always been the same.  It displays only where there is something in the mask layer, and hides everything else.

I can't explain why, but I'm getting the opposite behavior-- only the area
outside of the shape shows through, and the shape is masked. [I have a history,
when learning software, of stumbling into the one exceptional case that almost
never happens, but I can't think of a way that I might have changed a setting,
etc.]

Have you tried selecting all to make sure you don't have something on that layer that you're not aware of? Also try turning the layer to outlines to see if there's anything else on that layer

I deleted that layer and made a new one, which works correctly. It probably had
something to do with the order in which I made the first one, but I'd be more
comfortable if I understood what I did wrong and then right. Thanks for your
tips, which I'll keep in mind for the future.
