I lost a file I'd worked long hours on. I'm using Flash 8 and Windows XP. Went
to save my file and got an error message that said the file was read only or
the disk was full, and to save it with another name somewhere else. I tried
that. Tried changing the name, tried changing the drive. It wouldn't let me
save the file. So I figured I'd close it and reopen it. Only when I went to
reopen it, the FLA file was gone. I ran a search and there was no file anywhere
on any of my drives. It's just gone. How could that happen? Any ideas on where
it might be hiding? Many thanks.

Sounds like you had opened the flash file right after downloading (within
winzip or winrar) and didn't save it locally first. The read only error you
mentioned can happen sometimes in that case. You could have copied all the
frames and pasted them into a new document and saved it, but since that option
has passed, if you didn't save the flash document locally, then you have lost
it (at least changes you made). If you downloaded the file and instantly began
to work on it, try to look in some temp internet folders.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that wasn't the case. The file had been on
my hard drive for months. Nothing there had changed. I thought if I closed the
file I would lose my latest changes, which was no biggie. But like I said, the
file was just gone. I've worked in Flash for about 9 years and never had that
happen before. I guess the file got corrupted somehow.

I wouldn't really call it a lesson learned. It was just a weird and unfortunate
event. I've never heard of a file being deleted (unless your file was in deed
corrupted somehow - maybe a virus - and your anti virus program deleted it).
I've had misc. files disappear and found out McAfee had deleted it because it
considered something corrupt in it. Maybe check with your anti-virus software
and see if there was a recent even that would have deleted that file. Maybe it
guaranteed it. That's a long shot, but you never know.
