This has been a complete failure and disappointment.

I have used every humanly possible procedure in flash to get my bitmap fonts
to display properly in flash.

1. snap to pixels
2. whole numbers
3. quintuple checked every single clip
4. bitmap (no anti-alias)
5. installed / re-installed fonts

i have used about a dozen different bitmap fonts, checked different flash
versions and different computers. they still look horrible.

can anybody clue me in here?

i am in the twilight zone here.

All I can suggest is to check the font size. I know some pixel-based bitmap
fonts display best in multiples of 8 px. If all else fails, you can always make
a copy of your text field (on another layer - and save this as the original),
and break apart your text. This will convert the fonts into shapes. Then, any
time you need to edit the text, go back to your original text layer (you would
have to make this into a guide layer in order for flash to not render it - or
just create a movie clip with the original text and only have it in the
library). All the above is messy practice, but it will get the job done when
nothing else seems to work.
