Is there a button or something that I am missing that would easily mask out what is beyong my set scene size?  or do I always have to make a strange mask and spend time to line it up?

Are you asking about the area around the stage itself, or are you asking
about the area around any movieClip that's placed on the stage? Or is it
something else?

around the stage itself.

Are you using the normal publishing methods to show your movie? If you
place an .swf in a browser then you will see all of the rough edges, but
once properly published and displayed from an .html file, you shouldn't
see anything but the finished movie as intended.
