Hello, I'm pretty new to Flash, so this might seem like an easy one, but I
haven't been able to wrap my head around it:

Basically I want to create a menu that is based on a big square, where there
are 4 buttons, one on each edge of the square.  Each button will consist of a
work (ie, "links") and a small square aligned with the corner of the larger
square. Example here:  http://sundancerdesign.com/radsqurs1.jpg  I want it set
up so that when a button is clicked the whole thing (big square, links, small
squares) rotate so that the one clicked comes to rest on top.

I know the basics, timeline controls, some actionscript, but I guess the thing
I'm having a hard time conceptualizing is how it will work if someone clicks
one link, then another, then another.  How do I set things up so that no matter
what happens whichever link is clicked rotates to the top?

I humbly thank anyone that takes the time to help me.

Check out gotoandlearn.com there are some excellent tutorials there that will
address some of your issues.  The application is being rewritten at the moment
but this link will take you to the download page:
