I want to know where would I start, to design a 3d site in flash.  I understand
that I may have to use a 3rd party program like maya. But I'm afraid maya may
make the flash swf to large to a host on the internet.  Are there alternatives
if I am correct in my assessment?

you're perfectly right.  If you really want to go this way you most likely will end up with large files, but using Swift 3D might help, as it gernerates vectorbased swfs

Hi
though I'm sure you have goggled it yourself by now:
Swift 3D is found at: http://www.erain.com (as always there might be others,
it's just what I use - though not thoughtless)

The Usual information can be found here, in the help files, at a lot of books,
websites, it really depends on what you want to learn:

Using Flash, namely the authoring environment (Flash 8 right now)?

Flash as a technology?

Flash for (motion-) designers?

Flash for programmers?

Flash for standalone applications (aka Projectors)?

The "proper" use of Flash in a website?

Flash-video?

Just to mention some possible topics.

Where to best start depends also on what your personal background and skills
are, and how you learn best, reading, watching videos. trial an error, step by
step tutorials etc.

I'm not saying that I can help you with all of those, but the more specific
you are, the better the chances, that someone will be able to point you in the
right direction.

I have swift 3d, but I couldn't find any good tutorials for it so I kind of
pushed it to the side.  My skill level with flash is more intermediate to
advanced.  I learn best by watching.  If I see you do it then I grasp the
concept.  I have had some tutorials written that were so specific, ex: step by
step which gave me no problems. However, there are few people who writes those
types of tutorials.  I would like to see more advanced tutorials for flash
especially for what I'm trying to achieve with a 3d site.
