Can anyone recommend a good book on database development and modelling? I am
reading the one from Glashaus, "Practical Database Design for the Web", which
is not bad, but could use something to consolidate it.
BTW Let me help you save money if you're a beginner looking for a ColdFusion
book. I went against my instincts and bought "ColdFusion for Dummies". It
confirmed my poor impression of the series. I avoided Ben Forta's WACK because
it's published by Macromedia and I tend to avoid books published by the
software firm, but it looks like the one to start with.

I, too, tend to avoid titles that are published by the manufacturer of the
software. I much prefer to learn about how things "really" work as opposed to a
biased view of how things are "supposed" to work. The Forta books are my
exception to the rule, however.

As for the Dummies books, when you are attempting to learn about cooking or
photography or something like that, the Dummies approach might be OK. When
faced with the challenges of a technical concept and nature, however, the
subtle and not-so-subtle attempts at humor tossed throughout the reading tends
to annoy more than anything else. This churlish approach also tends to dilute
the credibility of the author (in my opinion) as well.

Agreed. The Dummies ColdFusion book seems to think that persistently addressing the reader as "Grashopper" is wildly humorous.

OK...so now I need two good books, one on database modeling (thanks gefjo, that's a good start) and a Coldfusion book with some really good real-world examples. Any takers?

This one got quite good reviews on Amazon, and one of the reviews contains lots
of recommendations. But I'd still welcome a recommendation from this list.

I have also been using chapters out of Purba's book, but it doesn't often pull
things together very well:
