I have installed CF6.1 on my other  PC (Win XP Home).  When I try to run
dynamic pages it does not work.  As far as I know I have done everything right
with my site in c:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\mysitename and using
http://localhost:8500/mysitename
I get an error that either the preceding is not set-up correctly or ColdFusion
is not running.  Any ideas ? Thanks.

Hi!

I believe XP home does not run database server software. This is at least the
only reason why I purchased the XP Professional version and that one works fine.

Can you run the CF admiistrator ?

quaerens, not sure what you mean here
I believe XP home does not run database server software
Any db would have to be installed to run.

XP Home does not have a web server

So I assume that you used the CF inbuilt web server ?
Have you installed XP SP2 ?
Is mysitename a folder ?
If so, try http://localhost:8500/mysitename/default.cfm
Where default.cfm is your start page, also try 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost
Have you checked the services that CF is actually running ?

<XP Home does not have a web server>
Ah ok.

<So I assume that you used the CF inbuilt web server ?>
I guess so.  I did the standard CF installation

<Have you installed XP SP2 ?>
Yes

<Is mysitename a folder ?
If so, try http://localhost:8500/mysitename/default.cfm
Where default.cfm is your start page, also try 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost>
I tried different folders.  I also tried 127.0.0.1 without success.

<Have you checked the services that CF is actually running ?>
How can I do that ?
Thanks.

Hi!

What I mean - in more direct terms - can be found in Microsfot Knowledge base
304197

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304197

It says - a bit bluntly -

quote

Users that need Web server functionality in a desktop operating system should
use Windows XP Professional.

unquote

Hope this clarifies

I can't remember what the default option for the web server was, but a list of
radio buttons should have been displayed and you need to select the inbuilt
server, or you could install apache (or some other) and use that.

To verify if the cf service is running. Now I can't remember the acual names
and I'm not on my PC, so you will need to do a serach for "service"

When I get home I will post the actual path of actions

While MS, recommends this and in fact so do I, unfortunately not all us
minions can afford the extra cost.
When I got mine, I explained to the sales tech what I needed it for and just
assumed I could install PWS.
My error, so I will now look at up grading (which I'm not looking forward to).

CF MX 6.1 runs fine on Windows XP home. You have to install the built-in web
server for CF when you install CF (it is one of the options). That particular
function runs on port 8500. You may haev to modify the URL in the IE link that
CF installs to use port 8500.

http://localhost:8500/cfide/administrator/index.cfm as an example.

If that is so, it is I think quite a serious issue.

If Microsoft are giving unaccurate information about their own products and if
it is true that the CF built in server works fine on XP Home how come
Macromedia don't say anything about it like "Contrary to what Microsoft are
saying you don't need to spend ?200 upgrading to XP Pro??

Is there anyone from Macromedia listening to this ?

Or from Microsoft ?

If this proves to be true I'm going to ask Microsoft what they have t say
about misrepresentating XP

quaerens,

I have XP Home edition

I have cfmx 6.1 installed and am using it to develop aplications using the
inbuilt web server with no problems.
I also installed apache, which worked, but had problems hooking cfmx into it
and as I did not have time to play with it, I just decided to use the cfmx web
server.

I have also installed mySQL and MS SSQL Server (personal edition) with no
problems

Your right.  I reinstalled CF MX 6.1 on my Windows XP Home, an by using the
build-in web server (at the bottom of one window; which I had miss the first
time) and it works.  Thanks  !
